A circular economy is an economy in which resources, or their quality, are not lost, but can be recycled endlessly. In which energy is no longer derived from fossil fuels, but solely from renewable sources. A circular economy is also designed to support and strengthen our environmental capital – ecosystems and biodiversity – instead of weakening it. In addition, the circular economy offers a foundation for a healthy and diverse society.
Friesland is already anticipating such an economy and is therefore creating products from natural materials. Energy neutral houses are being built, delicious products are being grown on saline soil, and household appliances are being made from recycled plastic. It is important to work on this together, because in a circular economy loops are closed, and a wide range of sectors will use each other's resources, knowledge and skills.
Circular Friesland shows that the circular economy is not just a concept but a tangible, sustainable economy which allows companies to make a profit and create jobs.
